print “Hello, World!”

I have spent many years aspiring to be a hacker. Up until now, only various flavors of Windows were available to me, and I didn’t (and still don’t) want to use Windows to learn how to hack. I am now 23 years old, married and out of college, with a full-time job in publishing (web & print), and today I begin the long, hard road to becoming a hacker.

I have considered which language to learn first, and I have wavered between Python and Ruby, but have ultimately chosen to learn Python because its larger user base (and therefore much greater resources for example code). My tentative schedule is to then learn C/C++/C#, Java, JavaScript, Perl, Lisp, PHP, SQL, and Ruby (not necessarily in order).

I will begin by installing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my home desktop, to perhaps later become Kubuntu once I’ve mastered the differences between Windows and Linux, because though KDE intrigues me, Gnome seems much more friendly to my current state of expertise. I found a cheap 160GB HDD on eBay (which I should receive in the mail after returning from Camp around July 5), and look forward to my new personal dual-booting Linux box, and my first experiences with learning Python!
